On Thursday, October 22, the Vintage Aero Museum hosted the Peninsula School District’s Aviation Academy for its Professional Aviation Panel, bringing students together with people working across the aviation industry.

The event reflects a growing priority for our museum: encouraging young people in the Peninsula and Gig Harbor area who are interested in aviation and helping them explore where that interest could lead.

Our volunteer panel members represented a wide range of careers. They included Seafair’s air boss, a flight nurse, an Air Force F-35 pilot, a UPS cargo pilot, certified flight instructors, a Hawaiian Airlines pilot, a flight doctor, a bush pilot, an aerial firefighter, and an aviation mechanic business owner, among others.

That variety gave students exposure to the many professions that keep aviation running. Flying, aircraft maintenance, medical care, firefighting, and air operations each offer different ways to build a career in the field. Bringing these professionals together gave Aviation Academy students an opportunity to meet people doing that work.

With vintage aircraft around them, students gathered to hear from professionals whose careers span commercial, military, medical, and specialized aviation. It was a fitting setting for a conversation about their futures, surrounded by aircraft that preserve the history of the field they hope to enter.

One participant was hired on the spot. That immediate outcome made the event especially meaningful for us. A gathering intended to introduce students to aviation careers became a direct employment opportunity for someone in attendance.

We are grateful to all 14 panel members who volunteered their time and experience to support the Aviation Academy students. Thank you, too, to the Peninsula School District’s Aviation Academy for bringing this group to the museum.

We look forward to continuing to support local students as they explore aviation, develop their interests, and take their next steps toward a career.
